Large antique copper engraved Armillar sphere, by Louis-Charles Desnos (1725-1805).
This world map shows the solar system surrounded by zodiac signs. Text panels surround the map, then are surrounded in a decorative border.
The plate is drawn and engraved by Simon J. Martinet, with his imprint at the base of the sphere.
Size of the page : 54 x 39 cm / 21,2 x 15,3 inches
Condition : good condition, old colors, on strong paper.
Edition : Paris, dated 1761, 18th century.
Charles-Louis Desnos was a librarian and Parisian «engineer geographer for globes and spheres of His Danish Majesty». He was a leading manufacturer of mapping instruments and globes. Desnos held the coveted post of Royal Globemaker with the King of Denmark, Christian VII. He received an annual allowance of 500 pounds. In return, he sent the king maps, books and atlases every year. He was a bookseller and publisher, and produced a considerable body of work, often associated with the geographers Zannoni and Louis Brion de la Tour (1756-1823).
