Very large antique copper engraved map of the kingdom of Sardinia, by William Faden. The map is published just before the French Revolution and decades before the Italian unification.
The map focus on the mainland possessions of the King of Sardinia in northern Italy, known as the Piedmont, Savoy, and Nice regions. These were the core territories of the House of Savoy, the dynasty that would later unify Italy in the 19th century. A detailed alphabetical index of towns, boroughs, and villages. This was very practical for navigation and administration in the 18th century. The map is richly illustrated with mountain ranges, giving a strong sense of relief, which is important in this Alpine region. Major rivers and valleys are drawn (e.g., Po River basin).
In right top, an inset map titled : "Morceau détaché qui représente l'accroissement des états de sa Majesté le Roi de Sardaigne, depuis l'an 1680". In English "Detached piece representing the increase of the states of his Majesty the King of Sardinia, since the year 1680".
