Antique Lincoln Bennett Folding Opera Top Hat

This folding opera hat, also known as a chapeau claque or gibus, is a top hat variant
in silk grosgrain fabric. It is fully collapsible through a spring system. They
were originally intended for less spacious venues such as theatres and opera
houses.
The inside of the hat bears the makers mark for Lincoln Bennett & Co,
Burlington Gardens, Old Bond Street, London
Lincoln Bennett was one of the leading makers of gentleman’s headwear during
the 19th and early 20th century. Old examples can be identified by
the interior emblem displaying the royal crest, along with an unusual shape
that alludes to a vintage pincushion.
