Antique Lincoln Bennett Folding Opera Top Hat Small 55cm

This folding opera hat, also known as a chapeau claque or gibus, is a top hat variant in silk grosgrain fabric. It is fully collapsible through a spring system. They were originally intended for less spacious venues such as theatres and opera houses.
The inside of the hat bears the makers mark for Lincoln Bennett & Co, Burlington Gardens, Old Bond Street, London

Lincoln Bennett was one of the leading makers of gentleman’s headwear during the 19th and early 20^th century. Old examples can be identified by the interior emblem displaying the royal crest, along with an unusual shape that alludes to a vintage pincushion.
