How to Choose the Correct Lid Size

The most accurate way to identify the correct lid size is to measure your existing lid. If you no longer have the lid, you can measure the jar neck instead.

If measuring an existing lid:

Turn the lid upside down and measure the inside diameter from one inner edge straight across to the opposite inner edge. Do not include the metal threads or rolled edge.

If measuring the jar:

Measure the outside diameter of the glass neck at the very top of the threaded section, from one outer edge straight across to the other.

⚠️ Important: The measurement you take will often be 1–2mm smaller than the official lid size. This is normal, as lid sizes are nominal industry sizes rather than exact measured dimensions.

Common UK Twist-Off (TO) Lid Sizes

61–62mm measured diameter ➔ Choose 63mm (TO63) (Most common supermarket jam jar size)
68–69mm measured diameter ➔ Choose 70mm (TO70)
80–81mm measured diameter ➔ Choose 82mm (TO82) (Commonly used on larger chutney and pickle jars)

Note: These are standard Twist-Off (TO) industry-spec lids, designed to fit jars with standard glass lug threads.
