Black Sabbath – Tyr (1990)

Released in 1990, Tyr is one of Black Sabbath's most underrated albums, marking a continuation of the Tony Martin era, where the band explored a more epic, melodic, and power-metal-tinged sound. While often overshadowed by the band’s classic 1970s lineup, Tyr showcases some of the best musicianship and songwriting of this era, delivering a tight, dramatic, and highly atmospheric record inspired by Norse mythology.

Following the hard-hitting approach of Headless Cross (1989), Tyr moves further into grandiose, almost symphonic metal territory, incorporating sweeping melodies, soaring vocals, and intricate guitar work from Tony Iommi. Cozy Powell's drumming is powerful and precise, while Neil Murray's bass lines provide a steady foundation. Geoff Nicholls' keyboards add an atmospheric depth that enhances the album’s cinematic feel.

Lyrically, the album draws heavily from mythological and historical themes, setting it apart from the more occult-driven or dystopian themes of earlier Sabbath records. Tracks like “The Battle of Tyr,” “Odin’s Court,” and “Valhalla” showcase this influence, creating a mini-epic suite that embraces the grandeur of Norse legend. Meanwhile, "Anno Mundi (The Vision)" kicks off the album with an almost Dio-era bombast, and “The Law Maker” brings a speed-metal intensity that’s rarely seen in Black Sabbath’s catalog.

Despite strong performances and a unique, almost progressive metal approach, Tyr never received the same recognition as earlier Sabbath albums. It remains a cult favorite, particularly among fans who appreciate classic heavy metal blended with power metal influences. The album bridges the gap between traditional heavy metal and the rising epic and symphonic metal movements of the 1990s, making it a hidden gem in Sabbath’s vast discography.
