In fair condition, with rubbing and wear to exterior. Light loss to binding at head and heel of spine. Some staining remnants down spine. Light hinge wear. Text blocks remain bound well, save for loss of end pages of Volume II. Light markings. Nicely illustrated throughout with black-and-white illustrations. Includes foldout map at front of Volume I in good condition. Tears to small map at rear of Volume II. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. A scarce set comprising reports from the Second Grinnell Expedition, which was dispatched to the Arctic to attempt to locate the whereabouts of Sir John Franklin’s expedition. By this point, Franklin and his crew were all presumed dead. Written by Elisha Kent Kane, the expedition’s leader, whose health would be permanently comprised due to the expedition. Kane would ultimately die a year following the publication of these volumes.
