Mali Mud Cloth
Mud Cloth, also known as the Malian Bogolan cloth, is perhaps one of the most distinctive African textiles.
The processes behind making mud cloth are gender-specific. Women hand-spin yarn of often locally grown cotton, which the men then weave on the local version of the narrow strip loom into plain cloth strips.
- Having been washed & shrunk, the women prepare a dye bath made from pounded Bougalan tree leaves and other ingredients. The cloth is soaked, then left out in the sun.
Using a spatular type tool, the patterns are painted onto the cloth using fermented mud. All the designs have particular meanings & significance.
The price is for the cushion cover and the inside.
Delicate & specialised hand washing advised.
