Colombia's Lazareto coinage was issued for isolated leprosy colonies such as Caño del Oro, to reduce the risk of disease transmission via regular currency. These coins were used exclusively within the colony and withdrawn afterward.
The 1921 5 Centavos coin (KM#L11) is part of a scarce and historically significant series. The total mintage was approximately 200,000 coins, but very few survive today in uncirculated condition, making this a valuable acquisition for collectors.
Historic Colombian 5 centavos coin from 1921, issued for use in the Lazareto (Leper Colony) on the island of Caño del Oro — a rare and haunting piece of medical and numismatic history.
Highly collectible for those interested in medical numismatics, Latin American coinage, or 20th-century history.
