Large nice and unusual map of PELOPONNESE in GREECE, by Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola (1643-1695), published by Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi (1627-1691)

with a magnificent cartouche.


Title:

"PELOPONNESUS Ad Antiquor mentem...A Iiacomo Cantelli Vineolen.....Gio Iacobi de Rubeis formis Rome ad templ... An. 1685."


The map depicts the Peloponnese, with a dedication to Gregorio Boncompagno.

The map is engraved by Francescus Donia Messanensis.

It has been made from a map of Pausanias, Strabon, Ptolemy.


Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi was an italian engraver and painter, at the end of 17th century. His father Giuseppe de Rossi (1570-1639) was the most important and active printer of the 17th century. After his death, Giacomo and his brother Giandominco (1619-1653) taked the firm of the father and made the firm the best known printing house of Italy in the 17th century. 

For this atlas, Giacomo de Rossi worked with Giacomo Cantelli da Vignola.

The firm published also maps from Nicolas Sanson.

Later, the firm was solded to Lorenzo Filippo, knowned as "Calcografia Nazionale", then, the "Regia Calcografica". It still exits today as "Calcografia Nazionale". It is as a museum which owns one of the most important and nice maps of the world.
