- 23rd day April in the year of our lord one thousand eight hundred and eighty eight
Nathaniel Jarvis, Jr., a New York lawyer with strong connections to Tammany Hall, was
named Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in 1858 and held the office for many years.
Jarvis is mentioned fairly often in newspaper reports of the time. For example, in 1870
he served as referee in a sanity hearing for one Richard Winthrop, whose wife and
daughter had sought to have him declared insane for selling family property too
cheaply.
