Despite being born into a wealthy family, the death of his father left him and his mother at the mercy of his aunt and uncle, who made them work as servants for their own families. At his mother's urging, Milarepa learned the art of black magic, a controversial practice in Tibetan culture, to seek revenge against their mistreatment. He mastered these magical abilities and utilized them to extinguish the lives of his aunt and uncle's entire family.
Consequently, Milarepa brought significant negative karma, a concept in Tibetan Buddhism that refers to the consequences of one's actions, into his life as a young adult. However, after committing these deeds, his initial joy at helping his mother became overwhelming remorse. This change prompted Milarepa to seek out a master teacher.
