SYMBOLICS OF UKRAINIAN EMBROIDERY

Since ancient times, embroidery has been considered the simplest amulet. It was traditionally present on any fabric, towel, or clothing. The collar, cuffs, hem, and neckline were embroidered with a protective pattern. Embroidery was done mainly with red threads; it was given special significance. Its shades are varied: scarlet, currant, poppy, lingonberry, cherry, brick.

When creating ornaments for embroidery, artists at all times turned to nature, but did not simply copy it, but, by stylizing it, simplified it, preserving what was most characteristic.

Bereginya. Bereginya is an important symbol that is found in many embroidery patterns. It was created by the people as a mysterious, multifaceted and powerful flower that symbolizes maternal strength. Bereginya also symbolizes the Tree of Life (sometimes it was depicted in the form of a bouquet or flowerpot), which is a connection of three worlds and a symbol of the harmony of the universe.

Grapes. The symbolism of grapes reveals to us the joy and beauty of raising a family.

Pigeon. In popular belief, a dove is a holy, sacrificial, “bird of God” (like a swallow, lark, nightingale), a symbol of purity, purification, as well as wedding ritual rites. Two doves are a symbol of love and creativity.

Our people treated the swallow, a faithful companion of their home, with great love. This bird always brings good news

Oak. Oak is a sacred tree, the embodiment of the World's ancestral tree, the guardian of male energy and life.

Kalina. Once upon a time, viburnum was associated with the birth of the Universe and the fiery trinity: the Sun, Moon and Star, and its name comes from the old Ukrainian name for the Sun - “Kolo”. Red viburnum berries are a symbol of blood and immortality, fire and the sun. That is why all wedding towels, girls’ and even men’s shirts are filled with bunches of viburnum. Viburnum combines symbols of beauty and strength, but extraordinary strength, extraordinary beauty.

Lily. Lily is a symbol of girlish charm, purity, beauty and innocence. Lily, according to legend, was born by Mother Earth and the goddess of water Dana.

Poppy. The red poppy means beauty, youth and their transience. A wreath of red poppies is a symbol of female purity; it is compared to white light. A young man is also compared to a blooming poppy.

Rose. Rose is the flower of the goddess of love Lada and her daughter, the goddess of spring Lelya. The “Flower King” is a symbol of goodwill and prosperity, and the red rose is a symbol of maiden beauty and purity

Water and Sun. All Ukrainian embroidery is marked with the blessed signs of Water and the Sun. The image of the sun occupies one of the main places in home decoration. The sun in the form of round rosettes, rhombuses, and horses can be found in various types of folk art.

The sun is often depicted as an eight-petalled rosette or flower,

and the Water sign resembles a coiled snake. Two elements that formed earthly life, and therefore they must be understood as maternal moisture and fiery parental energy.

From the depths of the past, these symbols came to Ukrainian embroidery in ornaments - the Earth and the Sun, which in combination with Water form a life-giving trinity. These are signs of those forces without which life itself is impossible.
