"ANTIQUOR IMPERIORUM Tabula, in qua proe coeteris, MACEDONICUM seu ALEXANDRI MAGNI IMPERIUM et EXPEDITIONES exarantur, Conatibus D. ROBERT DE VAUGONDY"

Large antique copper engraved map of the expedition of Alexander The Great, by Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786). The map covers Middle East, Asia Minor and part of Central Asia. In lower right, an inset map of northern India. The map is embellished with a nice cartouche engraved by Groux.

Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786), were the leaders in the cartography on France during the 18th century.

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert de Vaugondy published "The Atlas Universel", one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondy's integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps.

In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer of the king Louis XV.

Gilles often signed maps as "Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name.

The Robert de Vaugondy family were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family.
