Among the Nestorian Christians; with notices of the Muhammedans
First edition. Andover, MA: Allen, Morrill & Wardwell, 1843
512 pages. 5.75 x 9.25 inches
A very good copy of this scarce first edition. Complete, with twenty-seven drawings by the author, reproduced as colored plates, and a map of the region. Justin Perkins (1805-1869) was a Presbyterian minister and missionary, the first American to visit Iran. He lived among and established schools for the Christian Assyrians (who he knew as Nestorian Christians), and he set down the written form of the local language, modern Syriac.
Paper and text quality are very good, and the colored plates are crisp and bright. The fold-out map, on thin paper, is very nice, with closed tears at the binding.
