Hardback is overall in VERY GOOD condition.

• Light brown cloth covers have blind tooled ornamental borders. 
• Boards show some smudges, edgewear, wear at shoulders.  Corners are bumped, scuffed.  See photos.  
• Spine has copper gilt text dimmed and is sunned, with crushed ends.
• Binding is secure.  
• Pastedowns and feps have some light foxing, staining, pencil marks. 
• Frontispiece is present and has intact tissue guard.
• Foldout map is present.
• Illustrations are bright and clear.  
• Interior exhibits some light foxing, marginal toning, corners turned at pg. 4 and pg. 448.  
• Inside pages are free of writing and intentional marks.

A very good copy of this scarce first edition.  Complete, with twenty-seven drawings by the author, reproduced as colored plates, and a map of the region.  Justin Perkins (1805-1869) was a Presbyterian minister and missionary, the first American to visit Iran.  He lived among and established schools for the Christian Assyrians (who he knew as Nestorian Christians), and he set down the written form of the local language, modern Syriac. 

Paper and text quality are very good, and the colored plates are crisp and bright.  The fold-out map, on thin paper, is very nice, with closed tears at the binding.
