This is a very hard to find bean. There is no real substitute in recipes that call for them. This is an easy to grow runner-bean that works best on a good trellis. Plant early so you can collect many dried beans over the course of a season. Here in PA, that means we start on Aug 20th and have them planted out by May 5th.
