'Foreign Birds For Beginners' published by 'Cage Birds' of London, undated but circa 1953 and printed in England by The Chapel Press of Hampshire. Pale blue cloth hardback has slight signs of wear but certainly good and with title to spine. Original illustrated dust jacket is worn at edges but intact and price unclipped (two shillings and sixpence). Strong and intact spine with signs of age toning especially to endpapers (see photo 2). Privately owned with no marks of ownership. Lovely colourful frontispiece of four different birds.
This is the eighth edition, completely revised and rewritten by D H S Risdon (Dudley Zoological Society). 135 very readable pages plus index together with ten line drawings and fourteen colour plates throughout. This book concentrates on birds from overseas that have been imported to Great Britain to breed and thrive in England and the British Isles. This guide groups the birds in collections which are associated with the same aviaries and the author has first hand experience of the numerous species about which he writes. D H S Risdon was the Manager of Dudley Zoological Society and specialised in bird life. Delightful full and half page illustrations throughout the detailed text.
A good survivor of the era and priced to reflect aforementioned age wear.
