Scottish Sterling Silver Travelling Communion Set - Antique George V (1912)

An exceptional, fine and impressive antique George V Scottish sterling silver gilt travelling communion set - boxed; an addition to our Christian silverware collection

Description

This exceptional antique George V sterling silver gilt travelling communion set has a cylindrical form.

The plain glass cylindrical body is surmounted with an impressive detachable wafer box; it can be determined by the nature of this piece that this glass vessel will have been utilised for wine.

The silver box is encircled with the impressive engraved decoration incorporating the wording 'Angus Dei Miserere Nobis - Lamb of God, have mercy upon is'.

The conical cover of the wafer box bears a plain finial and is encompassed with an engraved zig-zag decorated border to the lower portion.

The glass container surmounts an impressive circular silver gilt paten.

The plateaued border of the paten is embellished with further engraved zig-zag decoration, replicating that of the wafer box cover.

The surface of each piece retains the original gilding.

This antique travelling communion set is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with velvet and satin interior, securing with a push fit.

The interior of the box features the retailer's mark 'By Appointment, Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh'.

This exceptional example of antique ecclesiastical silverware was crafted by the renowned Scottish silversmiths Hamilton & Inches.
