Keens Steakhouse, founded in 1885 in New York City’s Theater District, is one of the city’s most storied chophouses, renowned for its historic charm and unique traditions. Originally part of the Lambs Club, a famous actors’ society, Keens became a favorite gathering spot for Broadway performers, playwrights, publishers, and politicians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its most distinctive feature is the vast collection of more than 50,000 clay smoking pipes once kept by patrons, including luminaries such as Teddy Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, and Albert Einstein. Keens also built its reputation on hearty fare, particularly its legendary mutton chops, which remain a signature dish. Today, the steakhouse continues to operate in its original location, offering guests a dining experience steeped in the history, theater, and traditions of old New York. Keens is known for its mutton chops, which it serves more than 400 times a week. Tthe porterhouse and t-bone steaks are amazing.
