Founded in 1978 by three women—Jill Dunbar, Jenny Feder, and Helene Webb—the bookstore’s name, Three Lives, pays homage to Gertrude Stein's 1905–1906 collection Three Lives. Originally located on Seventh Avenue, the shop moved in 1983 to its now-famous corner at West 10th Street and Waverly Place, where it has remained ever since.  In 2001, longtime visitor and bookseller Toby Cox took over ownership, guiding the shop forward with minimal alteration but steadfast charm.
