Large antique and decorative copper engraved double hemisphere Celestial map, by Jean-Baptiste Homann (1664-1724), engraved by Georg Christoph Eimmart. 

Six circular diagrams surround the planispheres: Tychonic model of the planetary system, Ptolemaic planetary system, relation between the moon and the tides, annual illumination of the earth by the sun, Copernican planetary system, and the monthly illumination of the moon. The spheres contain the constellations of the northern and southern skies within a background of billowy clouds with banner titles. 

This is the second state of this scarce map that bears the imprint prostat in Officina Homanniana. 

Eimmart's popular map was later copied by other cartographers including Schenk and Lotter.

Condition: good condition, very small dirts in margins, old colors

Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724) was the most prolific map publisher of the 18th Century. He founded his company in 1702. In 1705, he became the Geograph of the Emperor Charles VI. In the same year, he was also Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. They protected the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. In 1716 Homann published his "Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt" (Grand Atlas of all the World). Some maps were drawned with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder. Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeded by the Homann Heirs company, which was in business until 1848. 

Georg Christoph Eimmart (le Jeune) (1638-1705) was a German drawner and engraver. He also created the first astronomical observatory in Nuremberg
