NEW POLISH BOOK

Why does the Church want to declare blessed precisely them - a poor, large family from Markowa in Podkarpacie - who hid Jews during the war? After all, this was the fate of many Poles during World War II.

Their execution became a symbol of the martyrdom of Poles murdered for helping Jews. However, this is not the key to understanding their history. Agnieszka Bugała studied thousands of documents with journalistic precision and conducted many moving conversations with people from the Ulma family's environment to present a portrait of a family that devoted its simple life to fulfilling God's will. Their fidelity to the Gospel unexpectedly bore fruit in extremely dangerous conditions. It was their starting point in making decisions. Without calculations and without estimating the risk when it came to helping another person. The Ulmas, called Good Samaritans from Markowa, can today be an example for us of simple, everyday and persistent fulfillment of God's will: "Whoever is faithful in a very small matter, will be faithful also in a great ” (Luke 16:10).

The book contains previously unpublished photos of the Ulma family.

"The war continued, terror was growing, hunger was getting greater, and Wiktoria and Józef Ulma did not lose heart and continued to radiate love. They already had six children when they took into their home eight people sentenced to death by the German occupiers because they were Jews. Who could then say that he really did everything to save his neighbor? What gave the Ulmas strength? What did they draw hope from? What did they bet on? In You, Lord, I have trusted, I will never be ashamed. Beautiful words, easy to sing, but how to live with them? The author asks the most difficult questions and looks for answers - she reviews documents, talks to witnesses, and considers arguments. It shows an extraordinary, beautiful, difficult and fulfilled life. A model for us and for the whole world. For all times."
Barbara Sułek-Kowalska, columnist of TVP Weekly, member of the Polish Episcopate Committee for Dialogue with Judaism

"Almost all Poles have already heard and appreciated the heroic and even heroic attitude of the Ulma family. This book answers the most important question: why did they do it? Why did they sacrifice themselves for others? What is the key to such attitudes. This is also very important today. In times when most value their own comfort more than mercy."
