This causes the pedal not to return and go soft.  
The standard spring which is high up in the pedal box on this model is notorious for snapping causing the pedal to drop and gear changes to become hard. The car also loses its bitting point. This high strength spring will eliminate that problem and is fitted lower down the pedal thus saving you to remove the pedal box. The spring is also used to take pressure off the top spring and eliminate it snapping.
