This fine china was part of an inventory removed from the liquidation auction of a Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW post restaurant.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW, or simply Veterans of Foreign Wars) is an American war veterans organization headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. The Veterans of Foreign Wars was established by James C. Putnam on September 29, 1899, in Columbus, Ohio. The organization's membership consists of veterans who, as soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coast guardsmen served the United States in wars, campaigns, and expeditions on foreign soil or in hostile waters.
To be a member of the VFW, the individual must be a U.S. citizen or national with an honorable discharge from the U.S. military, or currently serving in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, or Coast Guard. Membership also requires military service overseas during an operation or conflict and decoration with an Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, a campaign medal (or ribbon).
Restaurant ware, also called hotel china, refers to plates and bowls, cups and saucers, and smaller items such as creamers and monkey dishes that were made especially for use in commercial settings. Potteries such as Buffalo, Jackson, Shenango, Wallace, Syracuse, Tepco, and Homer Laughlin are some of the best known manufacturers of restaurant ware, which is generally heavier than dinnerware produced for the home. Some of the most collected types of restaurant ware include plates bearing an establishment’s logo, airbrushed pieces, military, western and floral themes.
Flat cup & saucer sets are part of the typical 5-piece place setting. They also are used for serving tea or coffee. The height and the style of the cup may vary greatly between manufacturers. The flat cup design has a flat base, without a pedestal.
SAUCERS: What is the saucer for when drinking coffee or tea?
Most common practice today is that the saucer is the vehicle for moving a hot coffee or tea cup around a table and as a catch, to prevent spills from dripping onto the table, or, heaven forbid, onto some luxurious table cloth.
In fact, it seems that people would drink both from the cup and from the saucer: After being served a hot beverage (e.g., coffee or tea) in a cup on top of a saucer, some would pour a small amount of the beverage onto the saucer, and then drink from the saucer. In certain ethnics and regions, this was a matter of custom. Although, it is true, pouring the hot beverage onto the saucer would cool it sufficiently to make it more palatable.
The cups are 2 3/4" tall and 3 1/2" in diameter, the saucers are about 5 1/2" diameter. Bottom Mark Shown, Jackson China Falls Creek PA. 1947 - 1965. They are enhanced with a scalloped design, the cup around its perimeter and the saucers around its edge.
NOTE: Some of this china was still in their original boxes. On the side of the box was stamped "3 doz. ALTO CUPS". Also, the number "45833". Was this the pattern name? number? I searched on Ebay and on Google with no results. Perhaps lost with age?
This is part of the Hostess serving pieces, usually referred to as a "COFFEE / TEA CUP & SAUCER". When evaluating dinnerware china, always remember, for every 12 plates, cups and bowls etc., only ONE serving piece per kind, was made for each set. That is what makes these particularly hard to find and expensive.
This auction is for a very hard to find piece of Jackson china. It has the custom logo of the VFW marked on its side in a flow blue style. This is part of the Hostess serving pieces, usually referred to as a COFFEE / TEA CUP & SAUCER.
CURRENT RETAIL PRICE: $39.99 (EACH)
Condition: This piece of vintage china is about 55+ years old. A miracle it survived this long. This fine piece of Jackson China came from a liquidation auction of a long standing Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW post. The post was well known in the area as providing fine dining. I see no apparent blemishes. See Pics.

Mechanical device disclaimer: Every mechanical device has a certain life span. The day it leaves the factory, it becomes one day closer to its end date. When I find these devices, I plug them in, wind them up or put in a battery. If they buzz, whirr or seem like they're doing what they are supposed to be doing, I keep them for auction. At that point in time, I have NO IDEA of how old or how much use they have incurred. They may last a lifetime or fail the next time they are turned on. Therefore, I sell these as "Decorative or Ornamental purposes" only, not functional. Which may be referred to as "AS IS".
Note: On some items, UPC symbols may have been removed for rebate purposes.
