was a Flemish/Netherlandish cartographer and geographer, conventionally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World).

Description: Decorative map of Sicily, from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the world. Includes an inset map of Syracusa and a list of the towns in the lower left. Sea monsters and ships are depicted in the seas. Ortelius based this map on Gastaldi's 1545 map of Sicily.
