Map title: Carte particulière de la Mer Méditerranée/ Marseille 1662

Description: Portolan Map attributed to a member of one of the greatest Map-making families. The Oliva family is renowned for producing fine nautical charts in the medieval Portolan tradition, both as separate charts and assembled into an atlas. This fine example, evidently taken from one of these atlases, depicts the western approaches to the Mediterranean, from Scotland and Jutland in the north, southwards approximately to the northern tip of the Cape Verde Islands, and extending into the Mediterranean to include the Balearic Islands and Marseille. This type of Maps is generally intended for use in libraries rather than on ships, hence the lavish decorations of coats of arms and compass roses, as well as the addition of mermaids and other sea creatures.
