Nice antique copper engraved map of the southern celestial hemisphere, centered on the Antarctic Pole, by Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706), a French engineer at the court of Louis XIV.
The circular format represents the celestial sphere. The Milky Way is shown as a pale, cloud-like band crossing the disk. Unlike modern star maps, this is a conceptual visualization of the sky as imagined from Earth.
Constellations are illustrated as mythological figures and animals, following classical and Renaissance tradition rather than abstract star points. The legend at the bottom lists them by letter, including: Le Scorpion (Scorpio), Le Sagittaire (Sagittarius), Orion, Le Centaure (Centaurus), Le grand Chien (Canis Major), Les Gemeaux (Gemini), La Croix (Southern Cross), La Mouche (Musca), La Nef (Argo Navis).

Alain Manesson Mallet (1630-1706), French military engineer active during the second half of the 17th century, is one of Vauban’s favorite engineers. At the same time, mathematician, geographer, cartographer, architect, 'fortificator' and soldier, he is also a prolific author who has extensively published in the fields of cartography and military architecture. Mallet is best known for his Description de L’Univers, first published in 1683, in five volumes.
