The Colossus of Rhodes was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, well known outside of the island. It represented a statue of the Greek sun-god Helios, erected at the entrance of the Mandraki harbor. The Colossus was built in 280 BC and only stood for 54 years before being destroyed by the 226 BC earthquake.
