Title of the map:
"Nouveau Mappemonde ou Globe Terrestre avec des Tables et des Remarques pour conduire à la Connoissance de la Geographie et de l'Histoire."
Very large antique copper engraved world map by Henri Abraham CHATELAIN (1684-1743).
The southern continent is labeled “Terres Australes”, a large imagined landmass common in maps before full exploration of Antarctica. Australia and New Guinea are joined. We can see North America still blank in its west part. At the top the columns summarize world geography and political entities: division of the globe, oceans & seas, gulfs and bays, islands and archipelagos, principal states by continent.
At bottom, there is extensive tables of empires, kingdoms, provinces, and important cities, with descriptions of their rulers, geography, and history.
The routes of most of explorers are written on the map (Magellan, Scouten, Larmiento, Mandane, Dampierre, Olivier du Nord, Gaetan, Tasman, Gama, Le Maire...).
Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684-1743) was a parisian Huguenot pastor.
His famous work is the "Atlas Historique", published in seven volumes. Originally published in Amsterdam between 1705 and 1720 by L'Honoré et Châtelain, L'Atlas Historique was corrected, increased and republished until 1739, the date of the fourth and last edition.
This encyclopedic work explains the history and the genealogy of the continents, with the geography, cosmography, topography, heraldry, and ethnography.
The text is from Nicolas Gueudeville, a French geographer.
Henri Chatelain represents the golden age of French cartography.
