Christopher Columbus baptized this island Concepción. A company founded by the French cardinal Richelieu bought the island from the English in 1650. Granada remained under French rule until 1762.Granada officially became British in 1763 by the Treaty of Paris which ended the Seven Years' War. The French regained control of the island in 1779, but soon after the British regained control of it. Peace was restored when both sides signed the Treaty of Versailles in 1783. Provoked by Victor Hughes, a pro-French revolt broke out in 1795 but was defeated by British troops. From 1958 to 1962, Grenada became a province of the Federation of the West Indies, which quickly broke out. The island gained independence on 7 February 1974, becoming a Commonwealth kingdom, with Eric Gairy as Prime Minister.
