INTO THE WOODS Stephen Sondheim James Lapine Tony Award Winning Original Broadway Musical
4' x 6" Unposted Postcard 1987 of the Martin Beck Theatre featuring the 42 Giant's Leg sculpture was
commissioned to artist Ann Slavit by the producers of the Sondheim musical. The giant from "Jack & the Bean
Stalk," one of many Grimm fairy-tales in Sondheim's work, remains offstage
in the show itself; his presence, however, dominates the action of the show. "Following my love for creating physical
artwork where it is least expected," Slavit says, "I thought no
other symbol better."
"The 42-foot boot, embedded with nasty hobnails,
dangled ominously above the marquee" at the Martin Beck Theater–– now Al
Hirschfeld Theater in 2003––for 764 performances and 43 previews, November
1987 to September 1989.
