Lilly Kristensen was born in Jutland, Denmark in 1933. She studied art in Copenhagen at the Tegne Kunstindustriskolen for four years, and continued her studies at the St. Martin's School of Art in London. England was her home for five years, until, in 1960 she arrived in Greece where she continued to live and work.
Lilly has home on Mykonos and it was there, on that island specializing in hand-woven materials, that the inspiration for woolen collages came to her. Up until that time Lilly had been working in oils, but while adding to her own large collection of hand-woven materials in almost every color and texture, she began to see possibilities for using pieces to form collages. Every detail, she decided, even eyebrows, which are made from threads, must be created out of hand-loomed materials.
Lilly's usual subjects are the landscapes and people of Greece. Over the years her work has steadily become more complicated thematically and more three-dimensional in effect as she began to build up the collages in layers
Lilly spent winters in Athens where the old parts of the city have provided her with subject matter, and also travels throughout Greece both to collect materials and make sketches of scenes for her collages.
All of her works capture the essence of Greece in a style and technique that are completely her own. And they preserve forever a part of the Greek heritage and tradition that is fast changing or vanishing with the relentless march of progress. Her works are homages to the humble tasks and pastimes of village life and to the timeworn stones of old buildings with their shareof memories. And finally her works are tributes to the eternal beauty of the Greek world, to its sky, its sea, and its magnificant countryside.
