The 9th Alabama
The 9th Alabama was principally formed from recruits out of several northern Alabama counties, though one company hailed from Mobile. It came together under the command of Colonel Cadmus Wilcox and was organized in Richmond, Virginia in May of 1861. They fought through the war until they surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April of 1865. The 9th fought in almost every major battle with the Army of Northern Virginia and took heavy losses in the Peninsula campaign and Chancellorsville.
The regiment arrived in Gettysburg on the July 1st with 306 men under arms. They were now under the command of Captain Joseph King with Cadmus Wilcox now a general in command the Brigade of five Alabama regiments. Wilcox’s Brigade were part of the new 3rd Corps commanded by A.P. Hill On July 2nd the 9th Alabama joined the en echelon attack started by Longstreet’s Corps by charging across the fields owned by Henry Spangler into the Union troops stationed near the Emmitsburg Road.
Here we see the scene as the 9th Alabama approaches the Emmitsburg Road. The 5th New Jersey and the 12th New Hampshire are breaking and retreating in the fields north of the Klingle Farm as they are caught in a vise between Wilcox’s Brigade and Barksdale’s Brigade which is unseen to the South. In the distant left is the Trostle farm and in the far right the Sherfy Farm. The 9th Alabama and the rest of Wilcox’s Brigade would pursue the Union troop all the way to Plum Run where the suicidal attack of the 1st Minnesota stalled the Confederate attack
