Gaultier (1561-1641) likely based his engraving on an earlier engraving of Michelangelo's famous Sistine Chapel fresco by Martino Rota (1520-1583) from around 1550.

A late impression with significant wear to the plate. On laid paper with thin margins and no visible watermark. Paper loss and discoloration on center bottom along the platemark (see photo). Edges reinforced from behind with tape.
