Pine Migratory
Top Cover or Lid
What is it?
Originally
large-scale and commercial beekeepers needed them to place large number of
beehives on trucks or trailers to move them around. Today more and more beekeepers are using them
for the following reasons:
- You no
longer need an inner cover so less equipment to keep around
- They are
flush to the sides, so they take up less space
- They cost less and you save money
by not having unnecessary parts (Inner Covers) and you save in labor costs by not having
to handle extra parts
- Easy to
drill a hole and install external feeders which are accessible by the bees only
from the interior of the hive
- Shims
on the underside gives enough space for pollen patty’s
- Less
space for hive beetles to hide.
How is it constructed?
- Rough
cut Pine is planed down to a perfect ¾" thickness
- Boards
are cut and squared to dimensions below.
- Most migratory
cover bases are made with plywood or planks pressed together. The base
for this cover is made with tongue and groove Pine planks glued and
clamped together.
- The end
cleats are 2½” wide and secured to the base with a ⅜” deep dado, glue, and
external screws
- The crossbar
supports are 1¾” wide and secured to the base with glue and external screws
- Migratory
covers sit directly on top of your hive with no inner cover which means there
is inadequate bee space below the cover.
We added a ¼” rim along the underside of the cover to allow enough space
for the bees and pollen patties.
