Tavernier is a French engraver and bookseller. His apprentice was Abraham Bosse. Son of Gabriel II Tavernier, engraver and printmaker in Paris, he had four brothers and sisters: Jean-Baptiste (1605–1689), Gabriel III (baptised in 1613), Daniel and Marie.

Melchior Tavernier was established with his brother Gabriel in Paris on the pont Marchant. In 1618, he is named engraver and printer in the king. In 1622, he moved to the Île de la Cité, where he first lived on Rue du Harlay and then, in 1627, he moved to the sign of the Épi d'or, opposite the quay of Mégisserie.

At the end of 1628, he received an order for engraved plates for "Éloges et discours sur la triomphante Reception du Roy en sa ville de Paris, après la réduction de La Rochelle (1629)". His business was bought in 1644 by the bookseller Pierre Mariette.
