Bookplate pasted and toned belonging to William Bradley Coley. William Bradley Coley (1862-1936) was an American bone surgeon and cancer researcher best known for his early contributions to the study of cancer immunotherapy. Front gutter tender with mesh exposed, otherwise tight binding. Limited facsimile edition, one of 100 copies, of the 1546 edition of the Index Expurgatorius. The 1546 edition was published in Brussels by the Faculty of Theology at the University of Leuven on the orders of Charles V and predates the first Roman version of 1557, produced under Pope Paul IV. The Index Expurgatoris was a constantly changing list of publications banned by the Roman Catholic Church and was not officially abolished until 1965.
