This old, hand-carved wooden trough is called noshtvi. It was traditionally used by our ancestors for kneading bread — the most sacred food in Bulgarian culture. According to old customs, the noshtvi were considered sacred and were passed down from mother-in-law to daughter-in-law as a symbol of family continuity and respect. The bread kneaded in them was regarded as holy, and no one was allowed to start eating until the elders of the household — the father-in-law and mother-in-law — were seated at the table.
