ABOUT Micromosaics: In the 1700s, when the Vatican was finally almost done upgrading their painted walls to be glass mosaic, there was a shiver through the multi-generation mosaic family dynasties: "It's almost done... what next?" The mosaics were astonishing--they would stay bright and shiny for hundreds of years, and not peel and flake like paint. But now what would all of the up-and-coming mosaic artists do for a job?

One of the young rebels, Giacomo Raffaelli, figured out an answer: Go small. To make this happen, Giacomo had first to figure out an entirely new approach to constructing his tiny mosaics. And he did.

In 1773, 20-year-old Giacomo had his first art show with smaller, finer mosaics than had ever been done. He laid the foundation for an entirely new craft--and new source of souvenirs for the wealthy tourists who made "The Grand Tour" of Europe.

Today, we can look back on the range of style and quality of "micromosaics" (also called "micro mosaics") that followed his innovative start. The whole party ended by the early 1900s, when there were less tourists traveling Europe, and those who went could take home photographs instead of paintings or micromosaic souvenirs. There were also less people willing to pay for the tremendous amount of hours required for the fine, beautiful works of the earlier days.
