Description: Canna Coccinea is a tropical species variety from Northern Brazil and Colombia with small but very bright fiery-red flowers with yellow throats and light speckling on long narrow staminodes. The stems are maroon-red and the seed pods also mature to a maroon color. The foliage is light green with huge soft leaves. Plants grows 4-6 ft tall. In the tropical areas these Cannas flowers around the year while in temperate climate July through October. I find them rather more tender than other cannas. This one is a runner canna - rhizomes tend to spread like water cannas do. I would recommend to treat them as water cannas - water frequently and abundantly during the active growing season. In cold climate and frost areas canna coccinea is not that happy being overwintered in the ground. It is best to lift them after the frosts have blackened the foliage. Clean up the rhizome, re-pot in hummus rich potting mix and keep cool but frost free until spring. Plant in full sun or light shade with regular irrigation. Hardy to zone 8. Cannas love heat and humidity and require a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight. Pictures are of actual plants in my garden the rhizomes/seeds eventually will grow into.
