Unusual antique copper engraved map of northwest Africa, by Giacomo Gastaldi, from a map of Ptolemy, 16th century.

This is a map from Gastladi's edition of Ptolemy's Geographia.

Latin text in verso. Giacomo Gastaldi (1500-1566) is a famous italian cartographer of the 16th century. He was the cosmographer of the Republic of Venice. He had an excellent relationship with Giovanni Battista Ramusio, secretary of the Venetian senate, who used Gastaldi's maps for his famous work "Navigationi et Viaggi".

Size with margins : 29,2 x 22,2 cm / 11,4 x 8,6 inches

Condition : good condition, a small foxmark in upper margin, hand colors.

Edition : Venice, 1562, latin edition, 16th century.
