MEASURING BUSINESS CYCLES - Arthur F. Burns & Wesley C. Mitchell 1st Ed 1946

New York: National Bureau of Economic Research, 1946

One of the first modern books to analyze business cycles over long periods of time, by American economists Arthur F. Burns (1904-1987) and Wesley C. Mitchell (1874-1948). The key concept they present is that many seemingly dissimilar indicators actually move together in the same direction (one example of this could be pig iron production and railroad stock prices). This book is a thorough and scientific investigation into long-term trends of diverse things like general business activity, orders, production, price indexes, wholesale commodities, money and securities, and business failures.
Arthur Frank Burns was 3rd Chair of the Council of Economic Advisors for President Eisenhower from 1953-56, 10th Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve from 1970-78, and United States Ambassador to West Germany from 1981-85. He wrote four other books. Wesley Clair Mitchell wrote the significant book Business Cycles in 1913, then was full professor in economics at Columbia University from 1914-44. He was one of the founders of the National Bureau of Economic Research and the New School for Social Research. He wrote nine other books.
