This considerable book has been described by the author as 'a pictorial museum' of musical instruments produced over the years. There are more than 830 photographs, all of them captioned and identified. This wide selection of illustration gives space for a representative range of the types and varieties of the non-keyboard instruments of the Western World during the four and a half centuries roughly from 1400 to 1900. The introductory text provides a valuable summary of musical history from the highly significant instrument point of view.
