About St. Johns Wort (Hypericum Perforatum)):
People have been using St. John's wort for centuries. Today, St. John's wort is most commonly used for depression and conditions that sometimes go along with depression such as anxiety, tiredness, loss of appetite and trouble sleeping. There is some strong scientific evidence that it is effective for mild to moderate depression.
The use of this herb dates back over 2,000 years to the Ancient Greeks, where their physicians recommended its use for a variety of nervous and mood disorders. Considered to be imbued with magical powers, St John’s Wort was used to fend off evil and to protect against disease. In more practical terms, it was used as a folk remedy to aid kidney infections, heal wounds and to alleviate nervous disorders – including insanity!
It also appears to have antibacterial properties and may act as an antiviral agent. The plant contains the active chemical hypericin, and this may be what gives the herb most of its efficacy. Other ingredients such as hyperforin and flavonoids may play a role.

What does St. Johns Wort Herb Tea taste like?
St. John’s Wort has a mild bitter taste that is comparable to black tea. Blends well with a variety of flavoring herbs without losing efficacy.

How to use/consume Dried St. Johns Wort Herb?

Decoction:
1 tbsp. herb per 250 ml of water. Boil for 10 minutes, strain and after cooling drink for 1 day. 

Decotion Recipe 2:
2 tbsp. are boiled for 15 minutes with 1 liter of water, filtered and drunk instead of water during the day.

Infusion:
2tsp are boiled for 5-8 minutes in a 500ml jug in boiling water. Strain immediately.
For a better-tasting, less bitter infusion, steep a short time.
For a more effective medicinal brew, steep longer.

NOTE:
> Do not use St. John's Wort during pregnancy or lactation.
> Not to be taken together with the contraceptive pill, anti-epilepsy treatments, 5-htp, and a number of other medications including anti-depressants.
> St John's wort should not be combined with a MAO inhibitor antidepressant such as Nardil (phenelzine) or Parnate (tranylcypromine).
> After stopping a MAO inhibitor, one should wait at least four weeks before taking other antidepressants, including Hypericum.
> If you are taking any medication consult your doctor before starting St John's Wort.
> It should not be taken together with foods that contain tyramine i.e. cheese, red wine, preserved meats and yeast extracts.
> St. John's Wort may interfere with medications given during organ transplant (such as kidney and liver.) Do not take this herb if you have undergone or plan to undergo a transplant operation.
> St. John's Wort can make the skin more light sensitive.
> The herb is not recommended for patients with: liver problems such as cirrhosis; chronic kidney disease; acute fever; diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

1 - 4 cups of tea per day.
