1973 Plaque presented to War Hero, author, Political/Civil Rights Icon and Business executive George Washington Lee (1894-1976) "Lieutenant Lee of Beale Street" - For the honor of having his portrait in the Rotunda on the State Capitol. Includes original 8 x 10 B/W Photograph of the ceremony. 12" x 9.5" plaque scratched and nicked. Photo torn with bent corners.
Note: Lee was the First African - American to have a portrait in the Rotunda of the Tennessee State Capitol. Lee was also the first African American to have a US post office named after him. In 1919 Lee was awarded the French Croix de guerre medal for bravery. His was the Senior Vice President of Atlanta Life Insurance Company until his death in 1976.
