Leonidas was king of Sparta, took over the leadership of the allied Greek army and succeeded in keeping them united and forgetting their differences.
His military intelligence became evident in August 480 BC. in the Strait of Thermopylae. In front of the overwhelming Persian army, Leonidas, with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians,
displayed courageous resistance, taking the advantage of the natural configuration of the position. When a Persian king of Xerxes sent him a courier and asked him to surrender his weapons and surrender,
the Spartan king responded with "Μολών λαβέ", meaning "come take them". But Sparta, Spartan, betrayed the pass and secured the victory of the Persian army.
All Greek soldiers were killed, including King Leonidas, who became a symbol of patriotic self-sacrifice. Handmade statue with gold-plated details, representing a warrior of Leonidas in battle, holding his shield and spear.
