Robert "Bob"/"Sat" Satterfield (1875-1958) was a Cleveland-based political cartoonist for the Binghamton Sun, Cleveland Press, Cleveland News, Sandusky Register, Kansas City World and the N. E. A. Service, working from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. He also created the newspaper stripsThe Family Next Door, Oh Thunder, and the Bicker Family. Inspired by Theodore Roosevelt's passion for hunting and the subsequent introduction of the Teddy bear, Satterfield created his cartoon panel Sat's Bear, which was a feature of Cleveland's daily life. In the 1920s he made the panel Days We'll Never Forget, as well as Bizzy Bear.
Offered here are 17 prints from Satterfield's self-published collection of his cartoons called Fifty Cartoons by Satterfield from 1913, many with Sat's Bear commenting on the margins, and many with Satterfield's signature in the plate. The collection was limited to 150 signed and numbered copies, all of which were privately distributed by the artist. Each is printed on paper with a "university" watermark (see photo). Most in excellent condition, though a few with nicks along the paper's edge. Never framed. A rare piece of American cartoon history.
