The name 'Dokra' or 'Dhokra' is used to indicate a group of Indian artisans known for their metal crafts from the tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. In this metal craft, the craftsman creates a wax model of the object he wants to make. Then cover the model with clay, once the clay is heated, extract the melted wax, obtaining the clay mold. Then pour the molten metal through a hole in the mold and the clay breaks to remove the metal object that is then smoothed and polished to perfection. This is also known as the lost wax procedure or "cire perdure".
Dokra art is revered throughout the world for its primitive simplicity and fascinating folkloric motifs and there are old pieces that reach a high value in the art market.
