Antique Bronze Replica Medal of Gwalior War (India) “Punniar Star” (Battle of Punniar 29th December 1843).

Gwalior Star 1843 (Battle of Punniar 29th December 1843) was Issued to British and Honourable East India Company Forces. The Gwalior Star is a Campaign medal presented by the Honourable East India Company to the soldiers of the British Army and the British led Bengal Army who took part in the 1843 Gwalior Campaign. The bronze original medal was made from bronze from the guns captured at the Battle of Gwalior on the 29th December 1843.

Please note, This item is an antique bronze replica of the original medal. The original medals are quite rare and expensive and are made of solid silver and bronze. Antique replicas such as this one are also much sought after and obviously not as expensive and made of bronze only. The originals tend to sell from around £600 to £800 up to about £1500 or more depending on the condition and whether of not the original clips or ribbons are present. The originals are issued and have the original soldiers’s name engraved on the back.

Rising tensions between the East India Company and the State of Gwalior led to a British led advance into Gwalior early in December 1843 in a two pronged attack. On December 29, 1843, the British Army defeated Maharaja Shrimant Jayaji Rao Scindia, and regained control of Gwalior. The first division of the army, commanded by General Sir Hugh Gough, was victorious at the Battle of Maharajpoor. Major-General Grey, on the same day, with the second division, was victorious at the Battle of Punniar.
