Here we have an 1800's T. NEWEY & SONS, LTD, England, Forged Iron, Armorer's or Ironmonger's Heavy Duty Type Chest Hand Auger Bit Brace.  William Thomas Newey (1825-1890). William was a gimlet maker and, by 1881, was employing 36 staff. His sons John, Thomas and Joseph were also in that trade. This company’s 1924 catalog indicates it was established in 1740.  This gimlet company eventually emerged as a maker of many types of hand tools and was located at 38 & 39 Allison St., Birmingham, Warwickshire, England.  His three sons eventually joined the company. This RARE brace is Maker marked on the shaft just above the chuck.  It is in very good operational condition.  This iron brace has a very large 4-3/8" dia. iron top pad handle that was placed against the chest when drilling.  It spins as it should. The brace is in full working condition with no cracks, break or repairs.  It has a heavy duty chuck with the original thumbscrew for holding wedge shaped bits. This brace is 15-1/2" long and has a 10" Sweep.  Very nice piece for the brace Collector, or put it to use !!
