Lovely Antique 1850's Cameo - Engraved on the back 'W to M June 3 1856'. Under a jewelers loupe it look like the cursive letters 'dmvy' are lightly engraved on the back directly under the right side of the pin. This is possibly the makers marking? This wonderful piece was my husbands Great Grandfathers.

The small card you see in the photos has the name and address of the person who gifted the piece to him. It is from 1856 also and was given along with the Cameo.

It was appraised in 1993 by the firm Shreve Crump & Low in Boston MA. This is the box that you will in the photos. We do not have the appraisal paperwork but the card that I mentioned earlier has notes scrawled on it that were made at the time of the appraisal - this is the green writing. They indicate that this was appraised for between $800 - $900 in 1983. There are no gold markings on the piece but it did test positive but at least 14k but not 18k. This seems to fit since the appraisal stated it was 15k Gold which was not uncommon back then. It is carved out of shell and adorned with small pearls.

Dimensions - Approx. 1 7/8 x 1 5/8
Overall Weight - 19.8 grams

Shape - It is in Very Good Shape especially considering age. The detailed carved work in amazing. There are light scratches to the gold on the back and some tarnish. I have not tried to clean it. No missing pearls nor chips in the shell. The box and card are both included in this listing. Please view and zoom in on all the photos as they are a big part of my description.
